Yes, you can use moisturizer after niacinamide, and you should! Niacinamide is awesome for skin types like oily skin and dry skin alike, and it definitely has a place in your skin care routine.

In this post, I’ll answer questions like:

  • Where does niacinamide go in your skincare routine?

  • Can you use niacinamide without moisturizer?

  • What skin types does niacinamide work best for?

Should you use moisturizer after niacinamide?

Ever since The Ordinary made a 10% niacinamide serum popular, everyone’s been wondering: should you use moisturizer after niacinamide in your skincare routine?

The simple answer is yes, you should moisturize after applying niacinamide and allowing it to full absorb.

Studies show niacinamide is great to reduce moisture loss, so it will compliment your current moisturizer. The two formulas together can reduce the appearance of dehydrated and dull skin.

What is niacinamide?

Naturium Niacinamide Cleansing Gelee

Niacinamide is a star ingredient in many skincare products. It’s a vitamin B3 derivative with powerful anti inflammatory effects that can massively improve your skin.

Studies have shown niacinamide has many benefits similar to moisturizers and other ingredients popular in skin care products. These benefits include reducing the look of pores and helping control oil production.

However, there are some negative side effects too that I’ll get into later.

What does a niacinamide serum do?

You should add niacinamide into your routine because niacinamide helps:

  • Stimulate collagen production

  • Control sebum production to reduce excess oil

  • Protect your skin barrier

  • Reduce the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles

  • Clear hyperpigmentation

Fighting Hyperpigmentation

Niacinamide helps with getting rid of dark spots by evening out your skin tone. This has the added benefit of improving your overall complexion and promoting a youthful glow.

Who are niacinamide serums good for?

Good Molecules Niacinamide Serum with BowTiedFawn branding

Niacinamide serums are suitable for any skin tone and all skin types. Plus, you can use niacinamide in any existing routine.

However, niacinamide is overall probably best suited for oily skin or acne prone skin thanks to its oil control properties, unlike other oil based serums.

Therefore, niacinamide fights breakouts and redness, like rosacea.

Caution with Niacinamide Serums

Sometimes, niacinamide serums can cause skin irritation. While you can add a niacinamide product into your skin care routine, you can also just find a moisturizer that niacinamide in it.

The CeraVe PM moisturizer is a good example of this.

When incorporate niacinamide into your routine, first consider your skin type.

Remember, you don’t have to use niacinamide in your skin care routine just because it’s a trendy ingredient right now.

What other skincare products go well with niacinamide?

Combining niacinamide with other skin loving ingredients can be a game changer for your skincare routine.

Some ingredients I like include:

Vitamin C and Niacinamide

A good vitamin C product will supplement a vitamin B3 serum nicely. Both Vitamin C and niacinamide protect your skin from environmental damage and UV rays.

You can layer them together as long as you don’t get too much irritation.

A good Vitamin C serum I like is Stratia C+C Serum.

Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide

Niacinamide with a hyaluronic acid serum is powerful for hydration benefits. Together, they can fight irritation and work great alongside moisturizers.

This is an especially great addition to a skincare routine for sensitive skin.

Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide

Salicylic acid and niacinamide together are great for treating acne and oily skin. They can clear up dead skin cells and leave your with bright, glowing skin.

A popular option is Paula’s Choice 2% BHA.
